O verbo to get é um dos verbos mais utilizados da língua inglesa. Podendo ser tanto um verbo auxiliar quanto um verbo principal.
Apesar de as traduções mais comuns de get serem pegar, conseguir e entender, o verbo pode ser traduzido de muitas maneiras diferentes. O verbo to get é um verbo irregular, por isso a sua conjugação não segue o modelo padrão de todos os tempos verbais.

- I am going to get a bus to go to school. (Vou pegar um ônibus para ir à escola.) – VERBO PRINCIPAL.
- She got robbed in my city. (Ela foi roubada na minha cidade.) – VERBO AUXILIAR.
Tempos verbais do “To Get”
É importante lembrar que o verbo “To Get” tem suas variações como os demais verbos:
Simple Present: Get/Gets
- I get home at 3 p.m. (Eu chego em casa às 15h.)
- She gets to the gym at 7 a.m. (Ela chega à academia às 7h.)
Simple Past: Got
- I got home at 3 p.m. (Eu cheguei em casa às 15h.)
- She got to the gym at 7 a.m. (Ela chegou à academia às 7h.)
Simple Future: Will Get ou To Be + Get
- She will get to the gym at 7 a.m. (Ela chegará à academia às 7h.)
- She is going to get to the gym at 7 a.m. (Ela chegará à academia às 7h.)
Past Participle: Gotten (Present Perfect: Have/Has Gotten – Past Perfect: Had Gotten)
- She has gotten to the gym at 7 a.m. (Ela chegou à academia às 7h.) – PRESENT
- She had gotten to the gym at 7 a.m. (Ela tinha chegado à academia às 7h.) – PAST

- ATINGIR – The ball got me in the nose. (A bola me atingiu no nariz.)
- BUSCAR – They are going to get their parents at the airport. (Eles vão buscar os pais deles no aeroporto.)
- CHEGAR – She got home late. (Ela chegou em casa tarde.)
- COMPRAR – They got a new car. (Eles compraram um carro novo.)
- CONTRAIR – I think my daughter is getting a flu. (Acho que minha filha estrá contraindo uma gripe/ficando gripada.)
- ENTENDER – I didn’t get his message. (Não entendi a mensagem dele.)
- ENTRAR – They got into the car in a hurry. (Eles entraram no carro com pressa.)
- FICAR – The teacher will get mad with that. (A professora vai ficar furiosa com isso.)
- GANHAR – I got a birthday gift from him. (Ganhei um presente de aniversário dele.)
- IRRITAR – What really gets to me is seeing his kid disrespecting her. (O que realmente me irrita é ver o filho dele desrespeitando ela.)
- PEGAR – I’ll get a cab to the airport. (Vou pegar um táxi para o aeroporto.)
“To Get” como Phrasal Verbs
Dentre as diferentes funções do verbo, também é usado em muitos phrasal verbs, exemplo:
- To get along → Dar-se bem;
- To get away with → Ficar impune;
- To get away → Escapar, fugir;
- To get down→ Abaixar-se / Deixar triste;
- To get off → Sair (de um meio de transporte)
- To get on → Entrar (de um meio de transporte)
- To get on with → Dar continuidade; prosseguir
- To get over → Recuperar-se
- To get up → Levantar-se da cama
